6 Tips to get your backyard ready for spring

As the warmth slowly starts to perk up everyone’s spirits and bring us back to the outdoors, you also might notice that your outdoor lawn and plants need some extra TLC. Not only is the garden budding with new growth but winter has left its mark with bare patches in your yard, broken tree limbs, and a lot of cleanup that needs to happen within the next few weeks. Below are a few tips to help you get your backyard ready for spring and for you to enjoy it again with neighbors, friends, and family.

  1. Remove Debris: One of the first ways you can start your spring lawn prep is by removing any debris that has accumulated over the long winter months. This can be items such as dried leaves, sticks, rocks, or anything else you see in your yard. This also is a way to help clear everything to give you a better idea of what you need to have done to it. To help give it a boost, some lawn experts suggest spreading a very thin layer of aged compost to help it. You also want to go along any flower beds that have grown weeds and get rid of those as well. Remove or cut down last year’s perennial foliage and toss it in the compost pile.
  1. Patches: Don’t be alarmed if you see several bare patches in your yard. The first step you’ll want to do is loosen the surface to about 2 to 3 inches and then level the soil by using the back of a garden rack to even it out. Next, spread a mixture of compost or fertilizer and grass seed over the bare spot. You’ll want to tamp the surface with the flat end of the rake to firm in the seed and then water as you see fit throughout the next few weeks.

  1. Think Of Your Yard Characteristics: Before you even begin other ideas about how to address your yard, look at the characteristics of it. Look at the soil type, sun, and shade pattern your backyard has. Be sure to look at where the winds are higher and where they might be when it comes to water. If you aren’t sure and looking to get some new ideas of where certain plants or trees should be planted in your yard, consider calling in a landscaper to help you! 1. Inventory Your Tools and Machines: Be sure to check if you have any equipment or handtools that need cleaning, repairing, or replacing. This will help your frustration, time, and money if you begin a project and realize one of your main items does not work. You’ll also want to make sure our irrigation system is working properly for the upcoming growing season too. Be sure to check any blades that you use on your lawnmower as well. A dull blade can rip your grass rather than cut it and can also make plants more susceptible to infection and water loss. You’ll want to either replace the blade or sharpen it.
  2. Begin Creating A Compost Pile: If you aren’t sure how to even begin creating a compost pile there are a few ideas to do so! Begin by layering carbon-rich materials aka brown with nitrogen-rich materials aka green to a 3 to 1 ratio. Add a layer of soil in between each addition. Good brown sources include garden trimmings, pine needs, straw, wood chips, dry leaves, and paper products. Green sources are green leaves, plant material, animal hair, grass clippings, and kitchen wastes.
  1. Add Pops Of Color: By arranging your flowers in groups of three, five, or seven, this arrangement of color can be a great pop of color in your backyard. However, you can also add plants that are growing large drifts to create a more natural appearance in your backyard. If you aren’t sure what type of flowers to use, call an expert to ask questions too! And you also don’t need to rely on plants alone to add some color. You can add some unexpected painted purple chairs, a large cobalt blue vase, or even an old bicycle that is painted yellow to bring some color to your backyard. There are so many great ideas to repurpose items as well.

Getting your backyard ready for Spring shouldn’t be a daunting task. Plan out what you want to accomplish by looking at your yard and take it step by step. Decide if there is anything you want to add or take away and set up times to make that happen. Budget for expensive furniture or items you want to add for more warmth, texture, or appeal.
