Hidden Gems of Newark

How many of us can say we actually have explored the town we live in? Or know all the hit spots in our hometowns? I am ashamed to say I’ve been living here in Newark for about 3 years and havent experienced all that it has to offer! I usually would go out in NYC but never hopped around in Newark.

So I am hitting up all the local spots in Newark..

Grammy Museum Experience Newark. I kept walking by the museum from the station home after work, always told myself to go inside. I’m glad I did, I was able to experience the music scence in New Jersey with a spotlight on Newark. I also learned some amazing facts about the arists that hailed from New Jersey. It’s only $10 and you can see the entire museum in 45 minutes. Do yourself a favor, go see it.

Carribean Eats in Downtown Newark. Right off of Broad St on Branford, this spot is must try! Authentic Carribean Cuisine, including Oxtails, Jerk Chicken and Jamacian Style Shirmp Patties! The atmosphere is inviting and the music makes you feel like youre on an island, in Newark.

Sweetwaters Cafe. A recent addition to the Newark scene, with regualr and specialty coffee. The French Vietnamese Au Lait, yes that’s a mouthfull but it’s worth it! The prices are reasonable and the lattes are almost if not better than Starbucks.

My Chich Nails. I’ve been getting my nails done here since 2016. When it comes to hair and nails, I’m loyal. This women owned nail salon does all styles and nail types, from regular gel manicure, to overlay to dip. They are amazing, and have become my 2nd home!

Cafe Arile. I’ve only eaten here for breakfast but the breakfast is defienitly worth the walk to Commerce St. There is something about coffee brewed at the local spots that make it that much sweeter and authentic for the coffee lovers. they also offer reakfast sandwhich with taylor ham – from what I learned is a Jersey thing.

27Mix. From lunch to dinner to dancing, you can find all these things and more here. On Wednesday’s they have wine bottles half off and good drinks. The atmosphere is inviting and the playlist is a mix of 80’s R&b and 90’s party music.

These are some of the spots I’ve tried here in Newark. Why not be a tourist where you live?! I still have a long list of local spots to try and add to the list, but these are some of my favorites so far. Hope you will or had great experiences like I did at these spots.
