You’d be A Fool Not to Take Me as I Am

H.E.R made this song “As I Am”. A love song- but have you ever thought of love songs as self-love songs? In the song she talks about how with everything she brings to the table – you would be a fool to not take me as I am. Now like you, I first heard it as a love song. She is talking to her man like you know I’m the best- don’t try to change who I am. Which is 1000% true- sis don’t let him change who you are.

Yet the more I thought about it, the more I thought about myself. How I am always evaluating who I am and what I don’t like. Evaluating what I want to change about myself. Why am I constantly reluctant to take me as I am? Like H.E.R said, you’d be a fool not to take me as I am. So why is it so easy for us to tell other people that, while we constantly talk down to ourselves?

As I am writing this I am also listening to Raheem DeVaughn – ‘Guess who loves you more”. Once again I found a way to identify self-love through this song. Guess who loves you more than me? No one! Or at least that’s how it should be. There are so many times we look for validation in the other person, without seeking validation or love from ourselves. Easier said then done right? Society has allowed us to nit pick the things we don’t like about ourselves. We hire doctors to surgically change the things we hate about ourselves or allow outsiders to define beauty for us. When in reality we should define that for ourselves!

There are so many times when we want our man to love our new hairstyle. To love the fact that we care so much, or love the fact that we may over analyze something. The list can go on and on. Or there are times we look for things in someone else without looking for those things in ourselves first. Easier said then done- I know.

I’m at a point in my journey where every song I hear- I think of myself first. So the next time you listen to a love song – JoJo “Gold” or Beyoncé “Love on top” or H.E.R “ As I Am” think of you. Find the love words in that song and apply them to yourself – from yourself. The next time you seek validation from someone else as yourself- do I love this about myself? How do I validate this Positive attribute about myself? Then love yourself a little more with every lyric, every song. You want someone to love you – like you love you. <3

Here is a playlist I made for you to enjoy!
